Dinner Rolls


My pea pal, Jodi emailed me this great recipe for dinnner rolls. She promised that it was to-die-for! So I figured I would give it a try.

Ingredient list:
9 cups of flour,
1/2 cup crisco
1 cup sugar
1 heaping teaspoon salt
2 packages of yeast

and just in case you didn’t believe me about the fact that I don’t know what I’m doing… Dad was picking up a few things for me from the store, and he asked if I needed anything else. I asked him if heaping salt was different from regular salt, and if so I would need him to pick some up. After a second or two of silence on the other end of the phone, it occured to me that “heaping was describing the amount and not the type.

So after that little fun-fact, I’ll give you one more chance to bail to Jodi’s blog since she knows what heaping salt is. And if you still feel like folllowing me along… here goes:

Mix 3 pkg. dry yeast with 3 cups warm water

In a small bowl mix:
– 1 heaping tsp. salt
– 1 cup sugar
– 1/2 cup Crisco

I am still not sure if I was supposed to use the vegetable oil type Crisco or the thick, white tub kind. I went with the oil. I have no idea if that was right or not. Note to self: check with Jodi for next time.

In large bowl, measure 9 cups Robin Hood flour. Make a well in the center.



Next, leave in bowl to rise in a warm place. I wasn’t really sure how warm the “warm place” had to be so I improvised.



Separate carefully into rolls about golf ball size. (Do not knead!)
Makes 48 balls.
Place 24 balls in greased 9×13″ pan.
Make 2 pans.



Bake at 350 degees F. 18 to 20 minutes til golden brown.
Grease tops with melted butter.

Overall, I really liked the going the whole process and making something from scratch. I’m not sure mine turned out perfect, but they were pretty good. They were a little sweet for my preference of dinner rolls and kind of heavy. But I’m sure both were mine own fault.
