Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

I started to add this to one of my Five on Friday posts, but I decided it needed a post all on its own.

I was recently accepted into a program called Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. The organization’s mission is “to introduce rememberance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with the free gift of professional portraiture.” They believe these images serve as an important step in the family’s healing process by honoring their child’s legacy.

I’ve known about the organization for a few years now through online photographer friends, and I’ve always really believed in what they are trying to do. It wasn’t until recently that I felt my skills, equipment and honestly my strength were in a place that I felt I could volunteer. The organization has a very careful screening process and wants to make sure the photographers they endorse have good technical skills and are at a professional level. So it’s truly an honor that they accepted me and my work.

I cannot imagine having a child and watching it pass away a few days later. I cannot imagine being told that they baby I’ve been carrying inside of me know longer has a beating heart. I cannot imagine the loss these families suffer, and if I can do something to help them through that time, I’m more than willing to do it.

I’ve been told by photographers in the program that this is some of the hardest and most rewarding work they’ve ever done, and I expect that I will feel the same way.

If you’ve never heard of the organization, you can read more about it on their website:

If you work in a hospital or know someone who is going through a situation like this, there is a directory where you can find local volunteers in your area.
